California is the latest state to ban the sale of marine products such as aquarium products, and the state’s governor has said the ban is necessary to protect the state from a threat from a single disease.
The ban is being enforced by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) in conjunction with other agencies.
More than 1.3 billion litres of marine and freshwater fish products are being sold in the state every year, according to the California Food and Agriculture Commission (CFAC).

The disease has caused more than 200 deaths, more than a million hospitalisations and cost the state $10bn in healthcare costs.
The CFAC said it was working to identify the most vulnerable populations, including those who are the first to suffer from the disease, as well as the first cases to emerge in the coming months.
