New U.S. regulations could impact more than 1,000 species

Washington (AP) A federal government agency that is overseeing the sale of recreational fish and wildlife products has proposed new regulations that could impact nearly 1,200 species, including thousands of endangered species.

The Fish and Wildlife Service on Thursday unveiled a plan to regulate recreational fisheries as well as wildlife in a way that will “better protect our fish and other marine life, the wildlife, and the people who rely on our oceans,” Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said in a statement.

Interior has been under intense scrutiny over its handling of a surge in reports of illegal fishing and other problems with commercial fishing in recent years.

It also faces growing pressure to address concerns about the health and safety of federal workers and the public.
